I have created many things in my lifetime thus far, but nothing feels as deep, pure, aligned, and full of love as Black Women Get to Be (BWGTB).
If you’re new here/new to me, hi. My name is Qubilah (pronounced kwabeelah), and I am a Black woman with a deep burning desire for Black women across the US to live out every single dream they have tucked away inside of them. My goals for BWGTB are multifaceted, but can be best summarized as this: I want to help Black women share their truths, break out of every mold, color out of every line, and burst out of every box this country, and world really, has tried to keep us in.
As a multi-passionate, multi-skilled Black woman raised in the US, I have been deeply frustrated by the way this country tries to limit who we get to be. Black women are rendered hyper-visible, yet invisible at the same time (more on this later). This contradictory position leaves many of us chasing lifestyles and things that we may not even want, but out of the need to survive and desire to thrive, we pursue them anyway. Bucking against what society and people (including family, friends, lovers, coworkers, etc.) expect of you gets you labeled as a troubled or lost soul.
I do not at all believe we were created to have just one area of expertise, one career, or just one place to call home. As cliche as it may sound, the world is Black women’s oyster. When I’m old and gray, I want to be able to reflect on my life and say that I explored every interest that peaked my curiosity, that I shot my shot at all the things I believed I could do. I want this for my fellow sisters, too.
Here’s what you can expect from BWGTB:
SENTIMENTS: A monthly newsletter that focuses on my personal feelings and thoughts on a topic that is relevant to the lived experiences of Black women in the US. Topics will generally be about personal growth, self and community care, plant medicine, nature, and rest.
COMMUNION: A sacred space to foster sisterhood and community among Black women in the DC, Maryland, Virginia (DMV) area. Events will be in person and focus on connection and nourishing our overactive nervous systems.
BWGTB PODCAST: This podcast will explore all the dynamic ways that Black women are learning, doing, being, and showing up in the world. Episodes will be solo and feature guests, specifically Black women who are striving to live their lives more authentically and courageously. Each episode will include actionable advice on how to do more things that feed, not exhaust your soul.
These are the offerings I really feel called to share today, but do note that this list may grow or contract based on my evolution.
All that you touch, you change.
All that you change, changes you.
The only lasting truth is change.
